Toyo Aluminium will exhibit at Milan Design Week 2022, the world’s largest design fair, in Milan, Italy, from 6 to 12 June 2022. The company will exhibit at the event for the third time since 2018, moving its showroom to Superstudio Più with the contemporary design studio we+ as the creative partner. Under the title RESONANCE: VORTEX to DIVERSITY, the exhibition will feature a large-scale installation using CHROMASHINE®, an interference aluminium pigment that changes colour depending on the angle of view.

RESONANCE:
Vortex to Diversity
A diversified society is a world where new values are nurtured as a result of different aspects meeting and resonating. CHROMASHINE®, Toyo Aluminium’s pigment where countless colors can be seen, might be an embodiment of such a world. This installation is an object inspired by a vortex, coated with only one grade of CHROMASHINE® pigment.
In nature, when two qualitatively different states: liquid and gas, fast and slow, warm and cold, thick and thin, heavy and light, come into contact, a vortex is formed. In other words, it visualizes the process where different things meet and fuse together to create something completely different, and may be the world itself where new value is nurtured from diversity. By multiplying a vortex with a pigment that shows various colors depending on the viewing angle, a rich and diversified world is drawn.

we+
we+ is a contemporary design studio founded in 2013 by Toshiya Hayashi and Hokuto Ando, that gives form to new perspectives and values using methods based on research and experimentation. The studio explores the possibilities of alternative design that establishes a close coexistence with the natural and social environment around us, and incorporates a diversity of values that are often forgotten in today’s society, where convenience and rationality are sought. Members with diverse backgrounds and skills: designers, engineers, researchers and writers, come together to present self-initiated projects that have emerged from their daily research, both in Japan and abroad. With the knowledge gained from these projects, we participate in a wide range of corporate and organizational projects, including R&D, installations as commissioned works, branding, product development, spatial design and graphic design.

Material
CHROMASHINE®
A metallic pigment that is coloured by “light interference” like soap bubbles, peacock feathers or butterfly wings without adding any colouring agents. CHROMASHINE® is made from aluminium flakes and is produced using Toyo Aluminium’s proprietary technology.
